Music is the most wonderful thing in my life, and I believe that, as human beings, we all have an innate need for music in our lives. Music has a key role in all cultures and throughout history, and whatever age, sex or religion you are, you are sure to be able to relate to music when it comes to expressing your moods and emotions. It’s easy to see why music is really a basic human need.
Although there is an enormous variation between music of different places and times, there has never yet been a culture found which didn’t involve music as an integral part of daily life. In fact, music has been around for over 55,000 years. What more evidence do we need of the importance of music to humans?
Music is a key way for me to express my ideas and emotions, and I think that this holds true for most people. I believe that this is why we love certain songs because they speak to us on a deeper level. We also find music soothing, and it can serve as an excellent tool to manage stress, lowering our heart rate, pulse rate and blood pressure while decreasing the level of our stress hormones. Music distracts us from the troubles in our levels, and when used in conjunction with meditation or yoga, it can help to promote focus and to stop the mind from wandering. This holds true regardless of the type of music being listened to, although classical music is usually the most calming.
The form and structure of music can bring order and security to anyone who is distressed, and it can encourage coordination and communication to improve quality of life. It can even help to relieve depression, boost self-esteem and reduce pain. It’s no surprise then that therapists are now recognizing music’s soothing nature and using it as a part of their treatments.
Even better, music is something that is accessible to everybody. While with other forms of study, it is important to have a deeper knowledge of the subject, music allows anyone to jump in and enjoy, whether they are experienced or not. There is always going to be a type of music to suit every listener and there is always something to enjoy in music making. Even if you find a type of music you dislike or don’t understand, by persisting, you may find that eventually your opinion changes and that you can engage with it on a deeper level.
Anyone can compose, improvise, sing and play, regardless of their level of experience. Who hasn’t sung the latest hit in the shower or hummed a tune of their own devising while doing the household chores? You don’t need to be Mozart or Beethoven to invent music yourself – it is the ideal way of engaging with musical traditions and of expressing yourself fully.
Music is a key way of defining humanity and defines us as a species. For most of us, music is a key presence in our lives and is essential to culture and history. It could even be said to be the soul of our society.
